Con el lanzamiento de su último sencillo, ‘The Last Time’ y la confirmación de que The Script siempre regresa adaptándose al momento en que vivimos, queremos repasar de cuántas maneras ha conseguido esta banda irlandesa rompernos el corazón. Con Danny O’Donoghue a la cabeza, una voz inconfundible y un sonido que siempre han sabido hacer suyo, The Script es uno de los grupos más seguidos a nivel mundial. Y suponemos que todo empezó con ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’, pero no es ni mucho menos la única canción que tienen en este sentido, y tampoco es la más dolorosa. Preparad la lista de Spotify.

‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’

La canción que dio la vuelta al mundo; la historia que dio la vuelta al mundo. Un hombre que no puede moverse porque espera eternamente la llegada de la amada. No se necesita más que unas primeras notas para reconocer una canción que a día de hoy, más de una década después, se sigue cantando a pleno pulmón, como si todos los que nos lanzamos a ella estuviéramos protagonizándola.

‘Breakeven’

Quizá la peor. La peor en este sentido, claro: la que más puede romperte el corazón, la que más daño puede causar, la que más hondo puede calar, porque habla literalmente de un corazón roto. En otros sentidos, seguramente sea la mejor. Es la favorita de la arriba firmante.

« I’m still alive but I’m barely breathing

just praying to a god that I don’t believe in

cause I got time while she got freedom

cause when a heart breaks no it don’t break even »

‘Six Degrees of Separation’

De manera muy directa y con mucho acierto, por suerte o por desgracia, The Script explica amablemente las seis fases que puedes atravesar después de una separación no deseaba. La siempre preciosa voz de Danny parece que aquí duele un poquito más.

« First, you think the worst is a broken heart

what’s gonna kill you is the second part,

and the third is when your world splits down the middle.

And fourth, you’re gonna think that you fixed yourself,

‘Exit Wounds’

Que no os engañe la dulce voz de Danny, esta canción dispara dolor en todas las direcciones. Su letra es desgarradora, casi podemos sentir las heridas abiertas a través de las que fue compuesta.

can anybody help me with these exit wounds?

I don’t know how much more love this heart can lose,

and I’m dying, dying from these exit wounds »

‘For the First Time’

Por esta canción sí me dejo engañar a veces, porque es cierto que me rompe el corazón pero de forma diferente. Es melancólica, nostálgica y tiene problemas que resolver, pero también es preciosa, una de las letras más humanas y sinceras de The Script.

« Trying to make it work but, man, these times are hard,

but we’re gonna start by drinking old cheap bottles of wine,

sit talking up all night,

saying things we haven’t for a while.

We’re smiling but we’re close to tears,

‘If You Could See Me Now’

Danny le dedicó esta preciosa canción a su padre; Mark hizo lo propio con sus padres. Fue la primera vez que éste cantó. No necesita ningún comentario más.

‘Long Gone and Moved On’

Una canción de desamor que puede desgarrar a quien la recibe si se encuentra en el momento oportuno, aunque desde luego no deseado, para ello. Simple, pero directa. Y llena de verdad.

still wear the scars like it was yesterday,

but you’re long gone and moved on.

‘No Good in Goodbye’

Juegan con las palabras para cantarnos, decirnos, básicamente, que las despedidas duelen y que ni siquiera siempre podemos mostrar ese dolor.

« Where’s the “good” in “goodbye”?

Where’s the “nice” in “nice try”?

Where’s the “us” in “trust gone”?

Where’s the “soul” in “soldier on”?

Now I’m the “lone” in “lonely”,

I can take this mistake

‘Nothing’

Me gustaría quedarme vacía tras escuchar esta canción, como si pudiera tomar un poco de su letra y mimetizarme con ella, pero sucede un poco lo contrario. A medida que Danny me cuenta que obtuvo «nada», a mí se me llena el estómago de todo tipo de emociones complicadas.

« And my mates are all there tryna calm me down

cause I’m shouting your name all over town.

I’m swearing if I go there now

I can change her mind turn it all around.

And I know that I’m drunk but I’ll say the words,

‘The Last Time’

Terminamos con el que ha sido su último sencillo. No creemos que vaya a ser la última vez que nos van a hacer sufrir, o que nos van a consolar cuando sufrimos.
